WILLIAM WARD

FRAMEMAKER AND MOUNTCUTTER

This month’s frame is a mount. I claim that a mount qualifies because it frames the drawing.

In this drawing, by Jehan Daly, the head in particular is a minor masterpiece of pencil work. So in order to focus the eye on the detail, I added a pair of lines, thick and thin, known as coach lines. Watered ink was used to match the weight of the pencil and not to draw the eye from the drawing but to direct it.

This is an example of something being better than nothing and simultaneously where ‘less is more’.

Simples.
