The artist wanted a soft coloured frame that did not overpower the background tones
of the picture while at the same time giving a lift to the stronger colours of the
ribbon and the oranges. During our discussions I got out a small silver slip which
had the red bole colour on the back of the section. "That's the colour," she said.
So I floated the sliver part of the slip by 2.5mm to show the the red and then painted
the sight edge of the frame the same colour. The result reduces the scale at the
sight edge of what is quite a heavy frame to match the detail in the picture.
Those with a keen eye will have noticed that this is the same moulding as the gilded
frame around the Rothermere Institute which featured as January's Frame of the Month.
Sadly, in their wisdom, the manufacturers of this section have discontinued it! Such
is the lot of picture framers.
